Why marketing never worked for you.

You concluded content “doesn't work for businesses like mine.”

The post was never the problem. The advice gave you the visible 10% and kept the system underneath it a secret — and the secret is where the money was.

Autopsy 02

“Run some ads.”

You boosted the post. The platform cheerfully reported reach, impressions, engagement — everything except whether any of it was worth the money, because you'd never been told what a good result was supposed to cost. The budget evaporated on schedule, and the only thing you bought for certain was the suspicion that ads are a casino.

Cause of deathSpending without a number. An ad with no cost ceiling isn't marketing; it's a donation with targeting.

“You need a funnel.”

Everyone said the word; nobody did the work. The diagrams looked like plumbing, the courses cost more than the problem, and every template assumed a business that wasn't yours. So “funnel” joined the pile of words you nodded at in podcasts and never touched — a vocabulary you were somehow supposed to convert into infrastructure.

“Just get a website up.”

You got one — clean, presentable, mildly proud of it. It described you accurately to no one in particular, the way a brochure does, and visitors agreed: they looked, learned nothing that moved them, and left without a trace. It has been quietly costing you every visitor it greets ever since, which is the most expensive thing a cheap page can do.

Cause of deathA brochure addressed to no one. A site that describes you converts nobody; only a site that recognizes them does.

Autopsy 05

“Follow up with your leads.”

You meant to. You genuinely meant to. Then the business ate your week, the lead from the fair went cold in a notebook, and the inquiry from March got its reply in May — to silence. You felt bad about each one, which changed nothing, because the problem was never your character. It was the infrastructure you were using: your own memory.

Cause of deathA system assigned to a memory. Follow-up is software's easiest job and a human's most fragile one.

“Hire an agency.”

They took the retainer and the credit. The decks were beautiful, the language was fog, and months in you still couldn't answer the only question that mattered: what exactly is working, and how do we know? When you asked, the answer was “it's a process” — and the process, you slowly realized, was the retainer.

Cause of deathPaying for mystery. A vendor whose income depends on your confusion will never sell you clarity.

“Check your analytics.”

You opened the dashboard with good intentions and forty charts looked back. Sessions, bounce rate, impressions — numbers about numbers, none of them willing to form a sentence about your money. You closed the tab feeling vaguely guilty and went back to work, which was the rational move, because a dashboard that doesn't conclude anything is decoration.

Cause of deathNumbers without sentences. Data that doesn't end in a decision is a hobby you're paying to host.

“Just stay at it.”

You did — that was never the issue. But effort without a system is a treadmill: every month you started over, re-deciding what to post, re-guessing the budget, re-learning nothing, because nothing was keeping score. Eight autopsies, one finding

Every tactic died of the same thing: it was an organ without a body.

Read the causes of death again — without a job, without a number, without a builder, without a memory. Each tactic was real and each one works, attached to the strategy before it, the memory around it, and the follow-through behind it. You were sold the organs one at a time, because organs are easy to sell. Nobody sold you the body, because the body is hard to build — so we built it.

It was never a discipline problem. It was an anatomy problem.

So all that advice was just… wrong?
No — and that’s the uncomfortable part. The advice industry isn’t lying about the organs; it’s silent about the body, because organs are easy to sell — a course per tactic, a tool per channel, a retainer per mystery — and the body is hard to build. You weren’t failed by bad advice. You were failed by true advice sold in fatal isolation.
Fine — which one should I fix first?
Careful: “which tactic first” is the trap on this page wearing a new hat. Fixing any single organ re-runs the experiment that already failed eight times. The honest answer is an order, not a pick: strategy before anything (who it’s for, what they want, what winning costs — the work the Think movement does), then the assets, then the traffic, then the loop that grades it all. It’s slower for two weeks and faster forever — and it’s the one sequence none of the eight pieces of advice ever mentioned, because no one selling you a tactic profits from the order.
